How To Hack the RadioShack 12-587 Into A Ghost Box
Today we are going to look at some pictures of hacking a 12-587 into a ghost box. The video at the top of this post also goes over all of this, but I figured that pictures would help as well.
The first thing to do is make sure you have a 12-587 and not a 1200-587, as this hack will not work on that version of this radio. Check the back of the radio to see which version you have.
Carefully pry apart the case. I like to use a small flat head to aid in the splitting of the case. Be very gentle, as there are wires that could get damaged if you open it too rough. Once inside it should look similar to this:
Remove the three screws holding the boards together and gently lift the top board off of the bottom board. There are wires attached, so once again be very gently. One its removed I like to face the speaker to the left like so:
Once you have the speaker to the left, you want to look for the row of pins at the top left of the board:
The back two pins control the mute function of the radio. Removing them will allow the radio to continuously scan out loud.
Carefully bend or remove these pins. Be sure not to damage any of the other pins or parts of the circuit board when doing so.
Once they are removed you can put everything back together. Be sure to line the pins up correctly when putting the boards back together and then close it all up and put in some AAA batteries. You have yourself a ghost box!
This has always been one of my favorite hacked radios to use, it's very portable and gets great results in my opinion.
A couple things about this ghost box: sometimes the scan stops (this is normal with this model), and you can manually scan if you desire with the tuner knob:
Thanks so much for watching, reading, and listening. Let me know if you get your hands on a 12-587 and how it goes for you in your sessions. For more hacks check out my Ghost Box Hacks Playlist.
